A delicious heirloom from Alabama, this variety has fat, red pods that are great fried or in gumbo! One of our most popular varieties, it is unique and rare.

What are the pros? Grew Great in Bama, HUGE pods

What are the cons? Very woody, Prickers!!!

Review:

I LOVE Okra. Its a summer staple that I plant every year. I am not new to okra. I usually plant Cowhorn, Perkins and Burgundy. I decided to try my states namesake Okra for 2015. I bought two packs to put one away and one to use. This Okra Grew fast and tall. Well over my 5'8" head. It put on tons of very tasty pods. It even withstood my geese attacking its base a few times. I was greatly disappointed, for two reasons. First, It was VERY woody. Unless you picked it very very tiny it was inedible. Pick tiny and often. The problem here is you have to pick it so small for it to be tender its basically useless. Second, the prickers. All Okra is sticky and will make you itch. I am use to picking okra. This stuff is like needles and got under my thumb and index finger skin. Caused swelling and pain for weeks. It became such a hassle to pick it I ripped it all out and burned it. I even shipped my reserved seeds to a friend and I absolutely hated touching this plant. I Love Bakers Creek!

Review:

Several years ago I purchased this seed from Baker Creek. I loved this okra. I froze some for gumbo but the best use was dehydrating them with cajun seasoning sprinkled on them. I took them to work and everyone was impressed that I made a snack food out of them. I plan to plant them again next year.
