Our favorite watermelon! We introduced this fine variety about 10 years ago after we were sent seed by Aziz Nail, an Iraqi gentleman who had collected this fantastic variety in Iraq. It is now nearly impossible to get seeds from this ancient country whose people have lost much of their genetic heritage in the long, bloody war. Now our corporate agriculture has been "kindly" suggested to native farmers who are losing thousands of years of plant breeding work. The 12-30 lb melons have hard light-green rinds that make them perfect for shipping and storage; the light color makes them resistant to sun burning. Plants are large, vigorous and give heavy yields of oblong fruit which do well in many conditions. The flavor is superb, being very sweet and luscious; and the texture is very crisp. This is a best seller and is a favorite of Dr. Amy Goldman and featured in her book "Melons for the Passionate Grower". Ali Baba has received much acclaim online "as the best tasting watermelon," and it will forever win a spot in any melon lover's heart.

What are the pros? Size, heat tolerant,

What are the cons? Fruit takes long to mature

Review:

Aruba has a hot semi-arid climate. I planted the Ali Baba watermelon in a compost made with horse manure beginning of this year 2017 and it is growing really well, harvested up to now 4 watermelons three 20lbs and one 25 lbs, with more on the vine.

What are the pros? loves heat, large melons

What are the cons? a few pollination problems

Review:

We get temps in the mid 90s starting in June and it doesn't usually relent until the end of August. These melons were rockstars despite a cold, wet spring. Our growing season is short but I was able to harvest 4 melons out of just one container of watermelon plants in late August/early September. Am going to try Blacktails this year so I won't be growing right away but only because I don't have space. There's always next year! Would highly recommend.

What are the pros? firm crisp flesh. super sweet

What are the cons? powdery mildew in my location

Review:

Best watermelon I have ever had and I've had many. Firm crisp flesh packed full of super sweet awesomeness! You can eat all the white edges and nearly to the rind before there is any hint of bitterness. Im in Vancouver Wa so I started mine indoors mid May and planted outside early june under a clear poly tunnel and was able to harvest 3 melons from 3 plants all about 15- 20 lb by mid september. They need lots of sun and heat. I pulled the poly tunnel off in mid july as the plants were pushing through the sides. By early September the powdery mildew came in as usual with the cool rains and nights but the fruits were nearly ready so no worries. Probably could have larger fruits and or more melons if I was able to keep them under clear poly through the season. Not the easiest thing to pull off in the PNW but totally worth the effort. Next year I may graft Alibaba onto a superior rootstock and see what happens.

What are the pros? vigorous vines

What are the cons? none

Review:

I have been shopping online since the early days of the internet and this is the first review I have written...this should tell you how much I like this variety of watermelons. The plants were vigorous and stayed healthy all summer. The fruits ranged from 10-35 pounds! No matter the size, they were all delicious. If you try one watermelon to grow, it must be this one! My biggest fear was during fruit harvest and if I would pick them at their pick readiness. I waited a few days past when the tendril closest to the fruit turned brown and it worked! Gook luck!
