What are the pros? Does well in poor/sany soil
What are the cons? Takes up some room
I'm growing these in the northern part of Michigan's lower peninsula, and so far I'm impressed! First I love rutabagas because I get the satisfaction of eating something like potatoes, with more flavor and nutrients, and fewer carbohydrates! These are doing well in my lightly amended (a little chicken manure and organic 5-4-4 fertilizer) sandy soil. I irrigate usually once every two to three days without rain, as the soil drains pretty fast, but it almost seems like the plants at the farthest reaches of the sprinkler may be doing better! The distinct purple tops are showing, and some of the tops are 3-4" already, double planted memorial day, thinned a week after germination, and thinned again (8-10" spacing) another two weeks later... I was even successful transplanting some that were too close, spreading them out for a nice solid row that sort of reminds me of kale. They can be mulched and left in the ground for winter storage, and you can even eat the leaves! My favorite tuber by far
