This scarce Pennsylvania Dutch variety with crimped and deeply ruffled dark green leaves tinged with bronze makes a perfect cool weather lettuce for small kitchen gardens. It is first mentioned as early as 1874 in the German seed catalogues of Philadelphia seedsman David Landreth. Early Prize Head is a commercial selection of this old landrace. Amerikanischer Brauner forms 9 inch diameter heads and should be planted 10 inches apart for best appearance. It can also be planted in rows as a cut-and-cut-again variety.
