A particularly rugged butter head variety that is exceptionally cold tolerant. Arctic King is a European variety that is ideal for Autumn sowing and Winter harvest. The bright lime green leaves have a delicious flavor! Plants are well suited for greenhouse growing in colder climates, although they will thrive with even a light row cover. In addition to being cold hardy, these plants are generally resistant to the mildew and rot associated with cold weather.

What are the pros? Hardy and Productive

What are the cons? nothing

Review:

I first grew this variety a few years ago. I got plants established too late in the season and they were still very small when winter hit. The seedlings were in a raised bed and somehow managed to live all winter without water or protection. Soil in the raised bed was frozen solid, but the little plants survived somehow. Once spring arrived, they took off and provided more lettuce than we could eat. I was giving bags of lettuce to neighbors for weeks. Harvesting leaves from the outside of each plant kept them producing until the temperatures got too warm and they bolted. The next year, I tucked a few plants into a tunnel and they produced lettuce through much of the winter for us. Glad to see Baker Creek carrying this variety. From my experience, it's tough, cold hardy and productive.
