We just harvested our first, ripe Arkansas Black watermelon and when we cut into it sounded and smelled so promising, but very disappointed. It had NO flavor. Almost sour tasting. It wasn't over or under ripe. It also wasn't a dark red inside, but a pink color. The rind did get almost black like they described. We have a couple more out there and hopefully they will have some flavor. We'll try again next year. As a side note we did grown them in a greenhouse, verses an outside garden spot since we had limited garden space available. Not sure if that was a factor or not into how they grew. It also took a lot longer than 85 days for them to grow. Not sure if that was because they were in the greenhouse verses garden spot outside.
