This incredibly delicious Iraqi variety comes from our friend Nael Aziz. Satiny, dark purple-black fruits get very large—to 3 pounds or more. Shaped like a squat teardrop, the flesh is sweet and tender, perfect for grilling or baking. The fruit are abundantly produced. Very heat tolerant and productive in our trials.

What are the pros? Sweet flesh thin skin

What are the cons? Attracts the flea beetle

Review:

Planted seeds in February. After battling the flea beetle that made the plants look as if shot by buckshot, the plants settled in and grew well into tall cages in raised beds. I give them plenty of well composted farm manure. After the 120 degree summer heat we started to get an abundance of fruit and have an ample supply for two people from three plants, as well as giving a lot away. This is my third year with Aswad from seed and it is more popular with my wife than Ping Tung or Millennium, both of which are prolific here. I pick them before they get too big, to be sure that they are really tender and just enough for one meal. Cut them into four 3/4 inch slices and fry in olive oil with LOTS of garlic and put fried garlic and grated Parmesan cheese over to serve - delicious.

What are the pros? first to produce

What are the cons? susceptible to bugs in my gard

Review:

I grew this variety last year and got totally skunked by insects. This year I grew 5 varieties of eggplant including this one again and all were hit dard by insects again. I did very reluctantly spray my plants with Sevin for fear I might not get any eggplant for two years running. After the bugs were vanquished these beautiful eggplant flourished, and I've had the best harvest ever. also the best tasting ever.

What are the pros? Tasty, good producer

What are the cons? none

Review:

I love this eggplant. This is my second year growing it, and I plan to make it a regular part of my garden. It did incredibly well last year and actually wanted to keep producing into the Fall and Winter, but I decided to remove it in order to plant other veggies. I may leave it this year to see if it will produce year round. I live in Sunset climate zone 10 and our soil is very sandy. This eggplant does incredibly well, is a big producer, and the eggplants are delicious. I highly recommend this plant and have not had any real problems with disease/insects so far. I make sure to occasionally fertilize and in the beginning when the plants were establishing, I did do regular foliar sprays of fish/kelp emulsion. Aswad will be a regular in my garden for all years to come.

What are the pros? Beautiful and huge

What are the cons? Flea-beetle magnet

Review:

Grew this last year, and absolutely growing it again this year and every year after! The plant is exceedingly sturdy and would have probably done fine without stakes, except that I'm a worrywart. The fruit was absolutely gorgeous, huge and smooth with the occasional white splotch to a dark violet skin, and perfectly white, nearly seedless flesh. The flavor was also fantastic. Unfortunately the flea beetles really love them, but a little powdered chrysanthemum should take care of that this year.

Review:

Excellent producer from early on until after the frost. Achieved massive size while holding for extended periods of time without producing seeds or losing quality. Excellent saut?ed, baked, or grilled. I will always grow this variety.
