A mix of radiant colors, all the more beautiful because the plants reach a nice size—very well suited to edible landscaping beds. Colors include red, gold, green, pink, carmine, and pure purple. Who says greens have to be green? This Frank Morton/Wild Garden Seed original is just plain fun!

What are the pros? Delicious, colorful, healthy

What are the cons? Slow to mature

Review:

This was my first time growing or using Orach. I planted it in the fall, like lettuce, not realizing that it could take summer heat, so that probably slowed it down. Once it took off, however, it was beautiful, sturdy and delicious! I am now planting again in the spring and plan to make this a regular in our garden. My son hates lettuce, but loves Orach -- a great way to get him to eat greens!

What are the pros? Enjoyed the experiment

What are the cons? Too hard to grow

Review:

I'd never heard of orach and I am glad I gave it try but I probably won't plant it again. I expected it to be as easy as other lettuces. I probably didn't give it the attention it needed.

What are the pros? Interesting

What are the cons? Still waiting

Review:

I was so excited to grow Orach again, and when I saw this mixed pack I had to have it. But unlike previous years where I had to move or remove Orach from my garden because it grew too big or spread too much this mixed pack refused to germinate. 20 seeds and 2 months later, I still only have one 2 inch plant. I have enough seeds from this pack and one other to try again, maybe for fall, but I'm a little disappointed in this particular variety; unlike ALL other Baker Creek seeds, which I have rarely had any problems with.

What are the pros? Great for something different

What are the cons? Slow to grow

Review:

This is tasty in salads, and pretty, too. It's both heat and cold tolerant. Slow to grow, and you don't get much per plant, so plant a lot if you want more than a tiny bit. It is a good, but not obnoxious, self-seeder, so expect for them to pop up here and there. I like this plant. Remember that it is a close relative of the edible weed, lamb's quarters.

What are the pros? Easy to grow, vertical

What are the cons? Caterpillars love them

Review:

I bought these seeds because of the beautiful colors represented in the photo. That, and I am terribly tired of kale and chard after this past winter. I wanted something new and this fit the bill. What I didn't realize was that this is such a vertical spectacle of a plant. Mine grew to 5 feet tall before I decided to harvest all of the remaining leaves and pull them out. I had to pull them out because they were shading other sun-loving plants I had put in behind them. I have now planted a second rotation in locations that would benefit from some vertical interest and color pop without shading nearby plants. The plants yield quite a bit of produce. I chop up the leaves for my salads. Even the dark purple is surprisingly mild. I sautee them for pizza toppings and in lasagne. They make a green smoothie wonderfully pink, too! I love all of the colors and will certainly make this a permanent addition to my garden.
