What are the pros? Beautiful when healthy.
What are the cons? Susceptible to disease.
I tried growing 3 of these guys in a pot - maybe that's where I first went wrong - maybe there were too many in the pot. However, they were all flourishing with a sphagnum/vermiculite mix. They grew huge, with lovely, lush green leaves. To start with, I had 4 separate female flowers on the 3 different plants... but they all ended up dying and not being pollinated because I had no male flowers blooming at the same time.
The next flush of growth was the male flowers. They were lovely, striking, vigorous. However, downy AND powdery mildew began to take my plants, even after I'd treated them for blossom end rot with a spritz of antacid and some good, healthy compost and fertilizer. No female flowers bloomed in a month.
I've not received a single fruit from any of these plants. Maybe I'll try in the spring to do one plant per pot, but I'm utterly disappointed. Right now I'm seeing if anything happens after I hard pruned the disease bits. I'm not going to hold my breath, though.
