What are the pros? delicious, easy to grow
What are the cons? fuzzy skin
This is my first year growing barese melons. I bought them because according to the description, they're similar to armenian cucumbers. I love armenian cukes but haven't had a lot of success with them the last couple of years, as they take a long time to ripen and are usually overtaken by powdery mildew after harvesting only 1 or 2. This year I started barese melon seeds at the same time as armenian cukes, lemon cukes and a few other types of cukes. To my surprise, I found a ripe barese melon just a few days ago, before any of my other cukes had ripened! I picked it when it was about the size of a potato. The skin is quite fuzzy (it's soft and cute!) so we peeled it and ate it plain. It tastes like a cucumber but not even a hint of bitterness! Not too seedy either, so that's nice. And like the other reviewer said, they are firm and crunchy. We've got quite a few more that are almost ready to harvest. Very excited to be growing these. Highly recommended!
