Barnside Sweet Runner Bean

80 days Scarlet-flowered runner bean routinely reaches 25 feet in height! Transform unsightly buildings, including barns, into a wall of hummingbird-attracting flowers. Pods can grow to 10-12 inches. Very sweet and tender when eaten at the immature stage, a great variety for freezing for winter use as green beans. For over 30 years Roger L. Smith of Norton Creek Farm, in Northern California has been selecting for height and aphid resistance.

Review:

I bought two gigantic planters, put four 10' bamboo poles in each, tied them together at the top, then wrapped jute twine around them in a spiral to the top. I planted one of these at the base of each pole with the objective of having two flower-covered obelisks at the entrance to the garden which you walk through to get to the garden. I couldn't have hired a better plant for the job. They just took off like rockets. Every day I would have to train the plant to wrap horizontally around the jute as well as grow vertically up the poles. If I missed a day or two I couldn't believe how it had raced straight up. The flowers were just spectacular. Gorgeous color and the plants were covered in them. The beans are a very nice added bonus. They're delicious raw. I haven't been able to not eat one then & there in the garden yet to see how they are cooked. Unfortunately something in the garden likes them as much as I do and is also eating them - squirrels?

What are the pros? beautiful and tasty

What are the cons? none

Review:

I grew this last year as an experiment - we needed to cover up a portion of the back of our old house which has conduit and breaker boxes etc. I grew the beans on 1/2 of the bean arbor. They grew well and the hummingbirds loved them. I had not considered growing them for green beans until a British friend exclaimed that they were her favorite! Pick while young, use a vegetable peeler to take the strings off both sides, slice diagonally about 1/4" thick and cook in salted water until tender - (not long) then butter and enjoy! This year they are growing up the conduit on the back of the house!

Review:

This is exactly what I was looking for. It covered the sides of my deck, and drew in the only hummingbirds I've seen this year. Due to inclement weather, The tops died back sharply, and the plants are only now producing beans, but I look forward to eating them.
