New! Mediterranean heirloom type from Napoleon's island birthplace off the French and Italian coasts. This versatile type comes in varying degrees of green to purple, often spectacularly mottled in both. A competent culinary type that makes a scintillating contribution in the border as well. Recommended!

What are the pros? Flavorful attractive plants

What are the cons? None

Review:

We planted this between our tomato plants and it has grown quite tall and is becoming more bushy. This is the most flavorful basil I have grown. I tie several sprigs together with cooking twine and drop the bundle into whatever is cooking, no need to chop. This plant is quite ornamental with beautiful purple and green leaves and purple/red flower spikes. It would make lovely garnishes. It has become my favorite basil am definitely planting it again next year.

What are the pros? Color, flavor, aroma

What are the cons? Breakage at the base

Review:

This is very aromatic and has all the strong basil qualities. You need less of this in your dishes than normal sweet green basil. Doesn't bolt too fast and when you pick the flowers off, the plant keeps getting bushier. These were all direct seeded and had a hard time getting started but once I figured out the watering schedule, they started growing well. The only major issue I saw was a few plants broke off at their base when they became about a foot tall. I'm hoping it was an anomaly because I have about 5 more plants coming up.
