Some plants take on an identity of their own, they develop an almost cult like following-- they become so much more than a variety, they represent a cultural or culinary tradition. Genovese Basil is the quintessential Italian pesto basil, with a flavor that is slightly sweet and peppery and most perfectly suited for grinding up into aromatic and nutritious basil pesto. Genovese basil was first bred in the Northwest coast of Italy, specifically the port town of Genoa, also known as the gateway to the Italian Riviera, and stretching throughout the Liguria region, where still today greenhouses dot the landscape, each filled to the brim with the traditional Genovese Basil variety. Basil pesto in this region is very serious business, special regional olive oil and pine nuts must be sourced and of course one must only use the Genovese variety Basil (the very best being grown in the sub region of Pra) it is also recommended to hand grind pesto with a mortar and pestle the mortar made of un polished white marble and the pestle of boxwood or pear wood-- the name pesto refers to the traditional method of making the basil based sauce with a mortar and pestle. Culinary prowess aside, Genovese Basil is also incredibly easy to grow and very adaptable, making this an excellent variety for home gardeners all over the world! What are the pros? Tasty, easy

Review:

I sowed these on clay soil hoping a good bit would come up. It's your pretty standard basil but it grows really well. Took a little while to come up but I'm sure if I mixed some nitrogen in it would have come up faster. Very tasty and germinates very easily. If you need basil, grow this. Just pinch the buds to keep it growing longer.

Review:

Your basic tasty basil. Directly sown in the garden, these germinated well, but took a long to time finally take off. We didn't get useable basil until late July. Now, however, the plants are growing like crazy, and they have largely been neglected. Overall, an inexpensive way to get all of the basil needed for my large batch of pesto.

I had several plants outside in the greenhouse, losing half of them to the el nino weather this spring from fierce winds that knocked over my plastic greenhouse 6 times in 2 weeks. Unfortunately, I had neglected most of my plants when it was time to plant because of finals for school and overtime at work. My dear "neighbor" in the backhouse of the property planted my seedlings, saving their lives. Although she planted them far too close together, they lived. We've been harvesting from 3 plants all summer long. And they just keep coming back. Requires little effort and the blooms are quite fragrant. Although they've been stressed from being knocked out of their pots several times, being planted too close together, and being improperly harvested, they're still going strong in August. Plant this basil. I've not had to buy basil at all this year which is great. Saving so much money. Plus, as with most herbs, the bees and other pollinating insects love them.

Quick to germinate, healthy & steady growth, harvested just before flowering for pesto by cutting above the lowest set of leaf pairs to encourage additional proliferation and future harvests. Very pleased!

Review:

Genovese basil is the very best basil you can grow. I have conducted my own personal experiments with basil and have grown dozens of different varieties. While each strain has its own advantages, Genovese basil is an all-around favorite. It is a very robust variety that grows quickly and has superb flavor for pesto and other culinary uses. I encourage experimentation with other varieties, but be sure to have several of these on hand for your summertime culinary needs. I am currently growing strains in Mel's mix, which is a equal part mixture of compost, vermiculite, and peat. I recommend this mixture because of its capacity to retain moisture while avoiding root rot from a heavy soil. I would also recommend watching instructional videos on the Internet on how to grow basil, including how to pinch or cut the leaves above a pair of growing leaves in order to maximize production. Heavy pruning of basil especially early in its growth leads to higher yields.
