What are the pros? Grows quickly
What are the cons? not very sweet basil-like
This is a wonderful herb that adds a lot of flavor. It has oregano-like overtones, a hint of anise, and lots of peppery spiciness. As long as you don't expect it to taste like common sweet basil, it's wonderful. Very easy to grow due to disease- and pest-resistance and vigor, it grows very quickly compared to the other kinds of basil I planted. I sowed it very late--well into August, and I was able to use it in the kitchen within weeks and it's still producing leaves. To compare, I planted some sweet basil at the same time hoping to be able to eke out a late crop, and it never got mature enough to use and has pretty much stopped growing at this point. Terrific in any kind of Middle Eastern or Asian dishes. I will definitely be planting this regularly in my garden. Germinates quickly and well.
