This massive winter squash is a favorite traditional variety grown in many of the flat plain areas of Northern Italy.  Originally developed in the area around Mantova.  The Berretina Piacentina di Mantova Squash is an exceedingly rich fleshed squash used in all types of recipes in Northern Italy.  It is closely related to Hubbard types of the species of Cucurbita maxima.  Otherwise simply known by many as the Maxima group of winter squash.  Fruits are heavy, flat and long lasting, the Northern Italians storing and using them throughout the cold fall and winter months.

What are the pros? very healthy

What are the cons? huge plant

Review:

I tried growing this in a 5-gallon bucket like all my other squash and melons, but this plant is HUGE. It needs to be in the ground (and probably not trellised) in order to get enough water. It is extremely hardy and vigorous with long vines and leaves. Also, it has the thickest, fastest growing roots (some even grow above ground) I have ever seen, very different from my past experiences. This plant will try to root itself every few feet along the vine (in order to support it's massive size, I suspect). I hope to try it again in the future, but definitely not in a pot next time.
