This black-seeded variety has tasty, nutty-flavored seeds that are popular in Thai cooking. It is also used to make healthy Black Sesame oil, which is popular in much of Asia and is a favorite oil of mine.

What are the pros? Carefree

What are the cons? Difficulty harvesting

Review:

Take review w/ grain of salt, new gardener. I tried these on a whim thinking "I like to eat sesame". Valuable lessons learned. Very easy to grow, sown in the garden in early spring in a bed that was forgotten about until fall. Out competed the weeds, attractive flowers. Turned out to be difficult for me to determine when to harvest, pods on the same plant seemed to mature at different times. Harvesting the actual seeds was extremely tedious and time consuming. There must be a mechanized method. Not going to grow for culinary reasons again. Due to the attractive flowers and their ability to outcompete weeds I decided to save the seed I was able to harvest and broadcast them into an area in the hopes that they colonize that area. The birds can enjoy the harvest next year.

Review:

I had no great expectations when I tried black sesame last year (who grows sesame in the cool wet mountains?), but I was pleasantly surprised by the large number of seeds per plant and the continuous production of new flowers and pods till frost.
