Long, ridged fruit are so delicious when lightly fried like okra or summer squash. Easy to grow and so ornamental. These make lovely large vines, yellow flowers and loads of fruit. Very resistant to insects and disease, can also be dried when fully matured and made into unique natural sponges! Collected in Thailand.

What are the pros? tastes delicious raw

What are the cons? takes over garden

Review:

I started indoors in early spring and transplanted to a large trellis in the garden. It has spread like wildfire and is taking over trellis for my asparagus beans, the fence, and all over my huge garden. finally started flowering in mid july but no fruit. I got my first fruit today and we cut it up and ate it raw dipped in ranch dressing. Delicious. Now there are baby fruit all over so it looks like it will be a prolific producer but you have a long wait. I plan on dehydrating some for snacks and trying freezing some to fix different ways. Next year it will definitely be planted off in an area by itself with lots of fence to climb on. The leaves smell like peanuts and wonder if they are edible or can be used in salads or cooked like greens.

What are the pros? Prolific and very tasty

What are the cons? none

Review:

Have been growing these for decades and use them the way Philippinos and Thai do. I start the seedlings indoors in April. They don't take up much room if grown on trellis. The flowers and tips of these plants are edible and make a great topping for soup made with the Gourd. You can clip the tips early for eating. Just leave the tips that look obviously "male" as these will make the gourd. These are called Patola in Pilipino if you want to look up how they are prepared there.

What are the pros? Flavor

What are the cons? Late

Review:

Sowed in late April and got first harvest in early September! To be honest, if it's a month early, I'll def give it 5 stars simply for the great flavor! Tender, sweet, fresh! Now it start to have a lot of female flowers, but kind of too late for zone 6. Hopefully can harvest a bunch more later before the cold season.

Planted your Bonanza 141 this spring for a total of 12 plants. The plants grew like crazy and are still growing and climbing. There was just one problem. There wasn't one piece of fruit on any of the twelve plants. Not even one bloom, male or female. I have never seen anything like it!

I've run out of my Thai Bonanza Loofah seed. It was amazing and ran 30' along our fence. We've quit growing okra due to our love of this vegetable. I'll be ordering Bonanza 141 this year!
