An old heirloom dating back to 1880. Vigorous vines give large yields of smooth green fruit. It is excellent for pickles; very crisp and good quality. A very popular variety at the turn of the 20th century.

What are the pros? Early and Highly procuctive
What are the cons? None
I planted 5 of them this year. I grow vertically with Mittleider and these really produce. I get about 7 pints of pickle slices every 3 days. They are consistently the the first and last thing producing in my garden. They are highly disease and mildew resistant too. I have had Burpless and Stright 8's right along side get covered with powdery mildew and these keep on growing and don't get it. I had one get hit with a vine borer this year. I injected BT and the base of the stem, it healed itself and it never missed a beat or had even a single yellow leaf from it. They are very sweet and make a great little slicer for your salads too.

What are the pros? Wonderful vines prolific fruit
I did a comparison planting between national pickling and these. They both did wonderful. I got from a 2 dozen plants over 3 bushels of cucumbers before I pulled them up. They did wonderfully when the field behind us was sprayed with something and then over irrigated. Overall wonderfully impressed with this variety as well as with national pickling.

What are the pros? Easy to Grow, Very Prolific
I grew ten of these plants up a trellis last summer, and boy oh boy did I have my hands (and arms) full! From ten vines I was able to pickle around six dozen pints, and still had plenty for fresh eating - they have wonderful flavor. I will grow these cucumbers every year for the rest of my gardening days!

What are the pros? Grew healthy vines
What are the cons? Not as many cukes as I wanted
This vine grew like a ... well like a vine. It didn't make as much fruit as I wanted, but still enough for us to have fresh cucumbers most days.
