Compact, hardy, French butterhead-type lettuce that was introduced in 1855. Crunchy green leaves are blushed in reddish- brown color. Plants require little space when growing, and are perfect for fall plantings. Hard to find in America.

What are the pros? Color and taste

What are the cons? Not great winter growing

Review:

I grow 8 to 12 different lettuces in my high tunnel during the winter and early spring months. This lettuce, though doing great during the fall, is the first and one of the only lettuces to get damage from winter cold. The color comes out great when the temperatures start to drop but it's winter survival in real winter cold is not the best. It does great when planted in February but then the coloring is not the best. If you live in a milder climate this lettuce might do awesome through the winter but if you live in a colder climate with temperature swings through the winter growing then I would not recommend this lettuce. Also this lettuce was the first one to start getting disease pressure when the weather got warmer here.

What are the pros? easy and super tasty

What are the cons? none

Review:

Lovely little lettuce! Had a friend over for salads and he referred to it as "meaty, something to really sink your teeth into." I agree with the little to no dressing. I mix this with red romaine and it doesn't need much else.

-Southern Louisiana-I planted this in early October and got almost 100% germination within 2 weeks. It's been growing prolifically with little help from me for the last 3 months, I planted very close together and have been gradually thinning/eating as it

Review:

I grew this all through fall '09 and it did great through several frosts for fresh Thanksgiving lettuce and even after that through December. I tried some this spring, but it was not as vibrant although it liked the cool rainy days. I will definitely grow this again in the fall and probably thereafter.

Review:

This lettuce shares an 8x4 raised bed with the Lollo Rosa lettuce. I start harvesting the lettuce before it reaches maturity and it keeps giving from November through April in our hot desert. The yield is abundant. It tastes wonderful and make a beautiful looking salad. We use little or no dressing, it tastes that good.
