What are the pros? colors, unusual petals, tall
What are the cons? bloom lasts 1 day, water needs
It is easy to grow under lights in soilless medium. I had almost 100% germination rate and they seemed to sprout overnight. I did not try to direct sow in the garden. Be certain when you plant the seedlings out in the garden that they are in an area that gets, or has access to, a lot of water. I have noticed that those that were planted in the low spots of the yard or where rainwater collects, my flowers are prolific. The tall ones are over 5' tall and the ones in the drier areas are around 18" high. The widths of the plants are between 6-12" and I use 18" spacing. I would imagine they would be bigger with more consistent watering. The photographs above are exactly what the flowers look like. I have seen lovely pink & salmon, crimson, magenta, white, creamy yellow, and bright yellow blooms for me so far. Though lovely, they are not an ideal cut flower. The stems are not very long, approximately 8", and the blooms only last one day. Remember to save the tubers to replant next year!
