What are the pros? Never fails in winter frost
What are the cons? Long time till harvest
I plant these in Mesa, AZ at the end of summer and grow them out all fall and winter long. We typically get 2 or 3 days of frost that kills most plants, but not Cascadia. It just keeps on growing, never had a crop failure with these. Once the winter frost risks have passed, I fertilize with Epsom Salt (MgSO4), which triggers massive numbers of blooms. By the beginning of Spring, I'm harvesting massive loads of delicious peas for myself, friends, and family every week. Plants keep on producing while temperatures stay below 90F or I miss a few pods that go to seed, then the plant dries up and dies.
It takes such a long time from planting to harvest that I get a little impatient with these plants. This last year I found out you can eat the tender young shoots these plants put out while you're waiting around for peas. Tastes great in a salad, and didn't seem to reduce my final peas harvest at all. Had my biggest harvest ever this year.
