Wonderful mild onion flavor, these long, thin chives are excellent in many meals; great raw or cooked. Lavender flowers.

What are the pros? flavor, pretty flowers

What are the cons? Slow to establish

Review:

Mine needed a season to get established well but now are large and beautiful. Just be patient with these. Started seed spring 2015. They germinated fairly quickly, most in about 7-10 days. However they were very tiny, like thin little strands of grass for most of the spring and summer. I finally took a couple of small pots and stuck them out on the patio in a larger pot that had nothing growing in it. I figured they could just sit there and if the lived, great...if not, I tried. By the end of August they were growing like crazy. When winter came and the first freeze hit, they wilted and fell over. I cut them back to the soil level and figure that was it for them. Well, this spring...early spring...to my surprise, I looked out and there was my potted chive plant coming up. Now, the plant is already bigger than it ever got last year and is covered in beautiful lavender blooms.

What are the pros? Taste, abundance

What are the cons? Slow at first

Review:

These chives are great. Once we got them established they really took off. The seem to like soil that stays a bit damp, but other than that they aren't too picky. We chop on them all summer long and in the winter we just cut them back to the ground and they re-grow in the spring! Super easy and pretty purple flowers that the bees love.

What are the pros? At least some grew

What are the cons? Poor germination, slow growth

Review:

Poor germination when everything else was great even the onions. The few that did germinate are growing slowly. Have not eaten so that they are strong enough to overwinter. I just wanted a permanent patch of chives. Prob easier to buy some from store.

only planted one row here in zone 3 and they just kept growing and growing! Tastes amazing when freshly picked and chopped for a topping on chili or salads or whatever! I was going to buy more seed, but looking at my garden for prep, I have chives coming up from last year! That was a nice addition to our meal in April to have greens from our garden again! They were hardy through several frosts too if I recall correctly!
