What are the pros? Fabulous, showy, prolific.
What are the cons? Bloom started late - weather
Started seed in a wet coffee filter. Buy a stack of these white basket-type paper filters for a dollar. Put on a pair of disposable powder-free gloves (I use Nitrile gloves -- I buy a box a Walmart in the first aid section). Spread a filter on a clean plate, wet it with cold water, and sprinkle some seed in the bottom half. Fold it up like an envelope and put it in a zip-lock bag. Seed will sprout in a few days to a week. Transfer the sprouted seed (seed with roots) to expanded wet peat pellets and put in a tray and put under a fluorescent strip light. Or, you can start these in the ground when the ground warms up. We like to do an early start a few weeks ahead of that time. We can't plant until after the middle of May in the ground here in Chicagoland.
These bloomed very late - not early maturity - but it was due to odd Chicagoland weather. Once started blooming, prolific and gorgeous. We will grow these every year. Usually they bloom sooner. Will bloom until hard frost.
