What are the pros? Colorful, unique flavor, hardy
What are the cons? Tops weak and brittle
Planted these in zone 4 around the 1st week of June. Made sure to pay attention to spacing this year, since last year I didn't and ended up with scraggly, inedible little things. This year was one of the hottest and driest yet. I was good at keeping them watered at first, but slacked off once they got going and on through the hottest part of summer. I dug trenches, filled with horse manure and tamped down so they would get length. Let them go until October. I will admit, this variety was the only one that the TOPS were wilted and weak compared to other varieties I planted (tops were purplish, which may have something scientific to do with it). This did not effect the carrot's performance, it just meant I couldn't just pull them up out of the ground. Flavor is somewhat spicy and coloring is like a bullseye throughout and is striking shredded in slaws or sliced in stir fry, but tends to lose color when overcooked. This variety is shorter than others, but tend to be fatter. No splits.
