75 days. A smooth and attractive, medium-large red tomato that has a full, rich flavor. The productive vines yield well even in hot weather; perfect for canning or slicing. This variety is from Dniepropetrousk, Ukraine, and was named after the first Russian Cosmonaut. In response to many requests, we are pleased to add this variety to the catalog.

What are the pros? Acid and tasty

What are the cons? Green shoulders and low fruit

Review:

It was a disappointing yield for my first year growing these. It was a rainy spring followed by a hot dry summer and the fruit didn't produce as well as I had hoped.

What are the pros? Tough, Productivity, Taste

What are the cons? Size of Plant(joke)

Review:

I grew only one of these and regret it. Out of the 50 tomato varieties, this one was by far the most productive! Even out produced my cherries. It wasn't the first to produce but, a massive plant with 5 main stems the girth of my forearm took up 10 sqft! For several months I received 5-6 fist sized tomatoes a day from this plant. It's well into December now and it seems to forget it's supposed to be dead and not producing but, I certainly don't mind the extra fruit lol.

What are the pros? Heartiness, taste, yields!

What are the cons? None

Review:

Volkov is a tough plant. Had a bout of week long frost--unusually strong for southern CA, with actual snow at low elevations--in December and Volkov took it a like a champ, others in garden were not so lucky. The plants are not huge, they've been going since May and its now Jan, with multiple trusses full of pretty orbs (avg 4-6 per truss). Taste is tangy, and yes, rich and full. Wall is strong and relatively resistant to cracking (rains do make them crack, but only a little, nothing compared to A.Ruby's GG or Ch.Purple), and they do well in just about every application. They have a tinge of green that's very appealing visually. Overall, a very good tomato. I'd classify it as a keeper, given it's production, heartiness (since it takes cold and warm in stride), and taste.

What are the pros? Resisted blossom end rot

What are the cons? none

Review:

I have really hot, arid summers where I live. It has already reached 117 degrees this year by the first week of July. I've harvested more tomatoes off my two Cosmonaut Volkov plants (I plant 2 of each variety) than any of the others. They make a great pasta sauce, and have a deep red, delicious flavor for slicing and eating fresh. A little juicy and plenty of flesh. I will be saving the best looking fruits and save some seed because these have earned a spot in my garden next year.

What are the pros? Large, good for slicing

What are the cons? Flavor ok but nothing special

Review:

To start with, I had this plant in a container, and a small one at that. It had only potting soil-good quality, but no native dirt-so it is entirely possible these factors impacted flavor and texture. I had heard numerous good reviews of this tomato including one from The Splendid Table. My experience was that the plant was disease free and a good producer of medium large red tomatoes. I was actually impressed by how much consistently large fruit it produced in a container. Unfortunately, I found the ripe fruit to be somewhat mealy and bland which seems to be the exact opposite of other reviewers. It has enough promise for me that I am going to try it in the ground next year to see if the flavor improves. It would have been a perfect slicing tomato if it weren't for the flavor/texture issue.
