Country Gentleman Sweet Corn

90 days. Introduced in 1890 by S.D. Woodruff & Sons. Sweet, delicious and milky; tender white kernels on 8” ears. The ears have no rows, as this is a shoepeg type, and kernels are packed in a zigzag pattern. One of the best heirloom sweet corns.

What are the pros? Excellent flavor and to freeze

What are the cons? Susceptible to wind damage

Review:

Outstanding sweet corn. Last summer was our first experience not growing a hybrid and we're never going back. Just as it ripened a huge storm came through and blew over all the corn, so we cut down all the stalks, cut the kernels off the cobs and froze it all. It has been a delicious treat all winter long. Any hybrid we've frozen has been mushy when cooked and just had a flavor that wasn't as good as fresh but this tasted like it fresh off the cob every time. It will be our first choice from here on out. Grateful we found it.

What are the pros? good germination

What are the cons? tasteless

Review:

I'm not sure what happened, but my stalks were nice and tall, grew two ears on every stalk, and ears were nice and full when mature. However, the looks were deceiving. My corn had basically no taste at all, except maybe a very slight hint of sweetness on some of them. I put a good nitrogen rich fertilizer in the ground a few days before seeding, side-dressed a couple of different times with blood meal and a little urea. The same stuff I use on all my corn and none of it has ever tasted off before. Our weather was neither too dry or too wet, I'm just very confused as to what happened this time. I don't know, maybe you'll have better luck than I did.

What are the pros? the taste

What are the cons? bugs also like the taste

Review:

Corn grew well in poor soil. The corn is very tasty. The only problem I had was it also attracted a lot of bugs. I do not like to use pesticides, so I will have to find something organic to get rid of the pests.

What are the pros? easy to grow, delicious

What are the cons? none

Review:

This was my first year growing corn and I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was. This corn grew tall and produced 2 and sometimes 3 ears per stalk! The corn is delicious – sweet but not overly so like so much of the Indiana sweet corn available today. I’m planning on growing this variety again next year - as is my neighbor who has never been able to grow corn because the 'coons get into it. We had no trouble with varmints or pests of any sort.

What are the pros? Grew to 6 ft

What are the cons? NO FRUIT unedible

Review:

Probably something I did or my climate. I am in zone 9a, raised from seed in February. Got big beautiful and then brown and dead looking . So I had to pick them. Nothing edible inside cobs, ingrown. Maybe too hot here or I did something wrong. I am a new gardener. in Las Vegas where it easily gets to 110-120 all summer.
