55 days. A wonderful heirloom from Denmark, this one is famous for slicing with its long, cylindrical roots. Produces much more uniform slices than round beets. This tender and sweet variety is also known as “Butter Slicer” because of its wonderful texture.

What are the pros? Flavor, texture, productivity

What are the cons? Tendency to pop up above soil

Review:

Best of the beets I have grown so far in terms of flavor and texture. I found that most of the roots grew above the soil-line, unlike other varieties, but this did not affect the root quality. Color is uniform and skin is thin. Entire crop stayed sweet, unlike some others which tend to bitter with increasing size.

Perfect for Pickling

What are the pros? uniform, easy to peel

What are the cons? none

Review:

These made the perfect pickling beet for sliced spiced beets. The "skins" stayed smooth so were easy to slip off after boiling to pickle them and had perfect texture . Their elongated shape makes them easier to prepare versus round varieties. These were super easy to grow, even with neglectful watering practices during the hottest, driest summer we've had in awhile. Of course, the greens are great too (During harvest I didn't have time to save all the greens for freezing, BUT the pigs sure loved them!) Tip to remember: PAY ATTENTION TO SPACING RECOMMENDATIONS! The first year I planted these, I just scattered them in the ground and didn't thin them out. I ended up with tons of beet tops, but a bunch of undeveloped, skinny 1 inch roots. When I actually spaced them accordingly this year, the result was worth it! The beets literally just about grew themselves up out of the ground! Because they grow more vertically than fat, I recommend this variety for people with smaller garden spaces.

What are the pros? greens and root crop

What are the cons? none

Review:

I am surprised not much is said about the greens of the beet. I planted a crop in the Spring and ate greens and roots all the way to Fall. They both were sweet and did not turn bitter the whole time. Both the greens and root did not requrie cooking. We enjoyed both best raw.

What are the pros? Awesome size!, Great Taste

What are the cons? None

Review:

This was the first time I grew these beets. They were incredible! Fertilized only with cow manure, these grew to enormous sizes and were not even woody like other beets! Great cooked and canned! This is now my go-to beet… no more experimenting with other varieties!

Review:

I grew eleven varieties of beets last year ( I know, I know, but we love them) and these were the very best tasting. Very, very sweet.
