Leaves are very finely curled and deeply notched. Produces a good blanched and curled yellow heart. This heirloom is high quality and tasty. In 1885 Vilmorin said, "Bulk for bulk, it yields a larger amount of useful produce."

What are the pros? Super easy and adaptable

What are the cons? Nothing

Review:

If you're a lover of bitter greens who laments at the lack of them come summertime bolting season, this plant might just be your jam if you provide it enough shade and water! We direct-sewed it in our 6b plot at the end of April just to see how it would do, into a bed that gets afternoon shade, and it's done so well that we're now trying to give it to anyone we can! Despite abnormally low temperatures (it froze! what?!) at the beginning of May, quickly followed by crazy-high temperatures, and then all kinds of rain and flash flooding through the rest, it has kept trooping on without any wilting, pest, or disease issues. It's now late June and finally drying out enough that I can blanch it. The blanched hearts are high-end restaurant quality, tender, and mild enough to be inoffensive to the uninitiated yet still interesting for the experienced palate.

Review:

The first escarole we had ever grown, and it was a great success! Sold really well to a local distributor who supplies high end restaurants. We couldn't supply him with enough! Definitely for specialty markets! Super hardy---We regularly chopped the plants to the ground, and they grew back even bigger. Sustained the plagues of grasshoppers we endured and the damage was never really evident as the curled and notched leaves acted as camouflage. Great Green!
