Saint Louis, MO
What are the pros? nutritious, hardy, pest-free
What are the cons? none. they are superb!
In my Missouri garden these beets provide tasty, nutritious food nearly year round. Spring greens, fall greens, often winter greens. The beets themselves are delicious raw and cooked. Eat the small ones fresh sliced or lightly cooked, make soup with the bigger ones. They even do fine through the very hot humid summers, growing in the shade of inter-planted tomato and pepper plants. I've even transplanted mature ones to make way for the summer garden and now enjoy perennial greens growing from grand old roots along the fence line. I find that the roots only get woody in their 2nd year. Not bad! These are beets to live by, a real friend in the garden.
