(Foeniculum vulgare) This is the Anise flavored vegetable that Italians love. Large 1 to 2-lb bulbs are delicious in soups, sauteed, baked and raw in salads. This Italian cultivar is fairly early. The authentic "Finocchio" for growers of quality.

What are the pros? Flavor, crispness

What are the cons? Restricted season

Review:

We could only grow them in fall with consistent cool weather but don't let them experience frost. It won't kill the fennel right away but it will ruin the bulb. Tastes great and crisp. Bulbs did not get grocery store size tho. Seeds that don't germinate in fall can surprise you when they decide to grow in early spring.

What are the pros? Easy to start & grow. Pretty

What are the cons? Bolts easily

Review:

Zone 5a. New gardener. We started a few pots indoors in Feb then planted in April. By early June they were looking like they were about ready to harvest, but the bulbs were still small. Noticed that one has bolted already so we will harvest the larger plants and leave the others. It's OK if they go to flower as they are a beautiful border plant. Kids love to munch on the fronds :) We will try again in July or Aug for a fall crop.

What are the pros? Reliable Germination

What are the cons? Slow

Review:

Slow, slow, slow.... or I'm just incredibly impatient. The germination rates were killer for this herb, but it's been slow to take off. I started in the winter and early spring after frost, and I still have plants that are only about 4 inches tall. I've planted it in various spaces in the yard and it is doing best in a rocky spot that only gets morning sun. That was surprising. I would really like to get some sizeable bulbs to harvest and enjoy more of the herbs before the Phoenix sun burns it all away... It's April and we're already getting up to 100... It's gonna be a hot one!

What are the pros? easy to grow, flavorful

What are the cons? none

Review:

I did not have my hopes up about getting fennel to grow here, so i admit, i just tossed the seeds in with some seed starter on the far corner of a bed of chard and left it up to fate. lo and behold, i now have a fennel jungle over there that i have to nearly beat back with pruning shears in spite of record drought conditions. absolutely marvelous.
