Originally collected in Edirne (Adrianople), Turkey, in 1948, and stored by the USDA ever since, until we grew it out in 2008! Gorgeous 6-8 inch fruits are richly striped in purple and off-white. May be even superior to Listada de Gandia in appearance due to its deeper luster, and actually preferred over it in our trials! Vigorous plants, very productive.

What are the pros? Flavor, prolific, beautiful

What are the cons? thick skins

Review:

These are the best tasting eggplants I've grown. I grow Ichiban, Black Beauty, and Casper, and these are easily the taste winner. They were some of the first to mature, somewhere in size between your standard European eggplant and an Asian long variety. The flavor is rich and nutty. In a mixed dish of roasted eggplant, we could easily tell when we got a bite of this variety. And they're so pretty to look at. Nice that there's some substance to it. Only complaint is the skins are thicker than Asian eggplant, but I find that's the case with most European-style eggplants.

Review:

I grew up in Turkey eating this eggplant. It is very sweet and can be eaten raw. Excellent roasted over an open fire, sauteed, fried, or baked in a casserole. We made preserves and pickles from this variety. This is a great substitute for mushrooms if you are allergic to them. Sauteed with onions makes a great steak topping. I am extremely grateful for the wide variety of heirloom mediteranean area seeds in your catalogue. I am reunited with the flavors of my childhood.
