What are the pros? Great Taste, Hardy
What are the cons? Harder to germinate than some
How am I the first person to write a review of this beautiful and tasty little guy? It's not the easiest lettuce to get going. It seems to take about twice as many seeds and twice as much time to get up and running but it's worth it, here's why:
It's beautiful, almost like a green speckled flower
Even in hot conditions like this summer in SoCal (85-100 F) it's done pretty good, no wilting, no burning, no bolting. It's not as attractive to hoop caterpillars as my Sunset and Little Gems for some reason, even though I find them hiding in the Flashy Oak in the morning, but who knows why.
But how is it to eat? I pulled two of mine early, just as they were starting to really build up a head and we really enjoyed them. Because of the heat the leaves were a little tougher at the mid rib than normal lettuce, but the taste was really nice. A little nutty and sweet. I can only imagine that as things cool down they will only get better.
