What are the pros? prolific and hardy

Review:

I planted these seeds in February, 2013. By the beginning of June, we had already enjoyed some for meals, but the heat and insects were taking a toll on the plants. I covered them with strong shade cloth, sealed the bottom with bricks to keep out grasshoppers, and watered them every day. The poor things survived but looked horrid. When the weather cooled off in the fall, these survivors took off. We have harvested chard all winter (they're in a greenhouse), given lots to friends, canned massive amounts, and there's no end in sight. With luck, the plants will make it through another brutal Texas summer! By far, the very best seed purchase we've ever made.

What are the pros? Very stubborn and hardy!

Review:

I had planted a few seeds on a lark back in 2012, They never produced all that well, but lo and behold, they survived the winter here where I live! I had all the ones that were planted actually come back after it warmed up, 2012 into 2013 we had a repeated warm up and freeze, bad enough it killed stuff that normally overwintered fine. Expecting them to go to seed was a bit... of a case of jumping the gun. My plant's went absolutely nuts, the biggest leaves I let grow to full size (before they actually started to wither and die off, most broke their stalks from sheer weight!) were the largest any of my neighbors had seen in their life. Any 'store bought' was like a candle next to a flamethrower. This is a very reliable breed, and great flavor, regardless of how large you let it grow before cutting leaves for use. And in my case, the "trunks" were probably around four inches wide side to side!

Review:

huge leaves. Some leaves were 2 feet long! One plant was some kind of mutation and grew doubled leaves. It had petioles that were at least six inches wide and and a blade that was at least a foot wide. started seeds indoors and more outside. Transplanted plants survived fine. They survived winter fine and produced the next spring. Eventually flowered like crazy and something ate out their stems so I pulled them out. Their stems got bigger than any beets that we have grown, easily 5'' wide and 8'' long. Almost no pests, minimal damage by some insects in high summer. We had never grown chard before. It makes a mess if you don't remove old leaves that will create habitat for slugs and pill bugs. Produced strong through the 2012 summer. There was a stretch of ten straight days with temps over 100 (up to 115) and it didn't even wilt. It had a strong flavor typical of chard (not very good raw). Petioles taste like salty celery.

My 6 year old planted these seeds and they came up with no problem. Had Chard from May till October. Very little pest problems

Review:

I can grow the Fordhook here without any problems. It is a vibrant producer all the seeds seem to germinate and it takes the freezes(lite) the heat humidity and flooding and still keeps on.I no longer look for Spinach but go straight to Swiss chard. I use it in place of spinach in my spinach dips. Simply blanch freeze and then use as i would spinach. I remove the stems though and save them in place of celery in some dishes. Don't like to waste. I never have the funny almost fishy taste i get from spinach once frozen. Great for making a "spinach" pizza. Can not find a better sub, ever, to replace Spinach which i can not seem to grow either, here. It just keeps going even in the hot weather. I get about 2 harvests. I cut them down to about 4 in and get my second harvest that way and replant in July for fall again. Better production then the colorful Swiss chard for me at least.
