This European heirloom produces large, broad, deep green leaves well into the fall and winter months in many areas; this flavorful variety comes to us from Italy. The English name is Giant of Winter.

What are the pros? Very tasty, easy to grow

What are the cons? Bolts quickly in summer

Review:

This is my first year with a real garden, and I have 3 types of salad greens growing to harvest when they are small: Red Russian kale, Red Romaine (from here), and this spinach. The spinach grew really quickly, and I started harvesting right away. It kept great in the fridge, and made for lots of delicious salads. This year, we've had a really early summer in Washington state. After about a week of long, hot days, the spinach bolted. Everything else is growing like normal, but the spinach couldn't handle the heat. That seems obvious, especially with a name like "Giant of the Winter," but, you know, I'm new to this. :) Will definitely grow again, but I think I'll find a different variety for my spring/summer garden. At least I get to plant the Rocky Top lettuce mix now...

What are the pros? Spinach

What are the cons? No Spinach

Review:

Germinated better for me than Bloomsdale Longstanding and many expensive hybrids which I have tried and slightly better than Giant Noble planted at the same time. Vigorous, large leaves. Holds well.

What are the pros? Slow to bolt

What are the cons? Not as productive as Bloomsdal

Review:

This variety did not grow as quickly and prolific as the Bloomsdale. I direct planted March 13 and now it is June 1 and it still hasn't bolted and we have had exceptionally hot May weather (consistent 80's). I will grow this variety over any other for spring crops from now on. I am very impressed with its ability to handle the heat.

What are the pros? delicious

What are the cons? bugs like it too

Review:

I know it isn't the spinach's fault, because it is so tasty, the bugs are enjoying it a bit, mainly just creating tint holes which makes it less visually appealing. I use those leaves anyway! This tastes great and is reproducing leaves quickly after I harvest them. Delicious on pizza.

What are the pros? Delicious

What are the cons? N/A

Review:

This is such an amazing spinach. I received seeds for this about 5 years ago and have been saving the seeds and regrowing it every year. The leaves are tender, big and delicious - a favorite for all my customers. It grows well in zone 7b all through the winter, although not very fast when it's really cold. I'll never be without this variety (I hope.)
