Also known as wolfberry, goji berry is a perennial shrub that bears profusions of bright red berries. Hailed as a powerful super fruit, it is it packed with antioxidants and makes an excellent addition to trail mix. An added bonus, these plants are extremely easy to grow and are perennial down to zone 4 in the United States.

What are the pros? Heat tolerant, quick/easy

What are the cons? Few

Review:

I ordered 4 of these plants early spring and two arrived damaged. Baker Creek quickly sent out replacements with no hesitation. I put the two damaged ones in the ground, partial sun, where they survived but didn't thrive. The rest I put in various containers: one in a large terra cotta pot, one each in a LARGE, MED, and SMALL plastic pot. Within six months, I had berries! The one in the smallest plastic pot put out the most growth. The one in the medium plastic pot put out the good growth and quite a few berries that are just now ripening (September in zone 6b). The large plastic potted Goji also has good growth and a few berries, but it grow tall and lanky, rather than out and bushy. Root constriction really changes the way this plant grows. They're all in full sun, and even in a serious drought with minimal watering by me they are doing great (we're talking 6 weeks with NO rain. A passing sprinkle, that's it!). They really are drought tolerant, hardy plants.

What are the pros? Prolific, delicious, easy

What are the cons? flea beetles love them

Review:

I planted two plants this spring. One is doing fine. The other plant is prolific and has already borne fruit! (late August) Only 5-6 berries so far, but it is very encouraging...and delicious. My kids love them too. Flea beetles are also big fans. The leaves are filled with their little holes, but it does not seem to bother the plants. The plant that did better was growing along with purslane, while the other was alone. Perhaps it served as a companion plant by shading the ground around the goji...?
