Golden Sunray Tomato

80 days. Uniform, golden-orange globes are so smooth and uniform they look like a commercial variety, but these have a rich, full, tomato flavor that is missing in modern varieties, being both sweet and tangy. Productive vines yield lots of 8 to 10-oz. fruit that excel at markets; great for fresh use and sauce. This tomato was preserved by the late Ben Quisenberry.

What are the pros? prolific and disease resistant

What are the cons? None

Review:

I did a trial of quite a few different heirloom tomatoes for our community garden's food bank crop. The golden sunray were one of the best producers and tasted excellent with few seeds and firm flesh. They also looked great and transported well. They did not get some of the diseases that the others were afflicted with. Definitely will be a staple in the garden.

Review:

This is the best tasting tomato we have ever grown. It is beautiful and the consistency is wonderful. Large fruit that rarely makes it up to the house. I will grow a full row of these next year as they withstood the terrible weather this year from snow to torrential rains and hail. They seem to resist pests better than the other varieties we have growing this year.

Review:

I've grown this 2 years now and it's really not done much. Not sure why when all of the other varieties of tomatoes I've grown have been great. Has barely produced for me. The first summer I barely noticed it in the garden as I got almost nothing from it. Last summer was very hot and dry and I had to water every day as the ground got so dry most of my garden would start to wilt by the end of the day without the daily waterings. Then we'd get a day or two of rains followed by the heat again. This one really couldn't withstand the heat stress and irregular waterings and developed blossom end rot despite any thing I did to try to fix the problem. It was the only one of my 18 tomato plants to have significant problems and the few tomatoes it did produce had to be thrown out because of the rot on the bottom. Maybe it's just not good for the variable weather and temperatures we get here in SW PA.

Review:

The best tasting tomatoes this year. Lost one of my three plants, the other two had tons of foliage. The tomatoes didn't show up until late. Once they did they were fantastic. Firm, perfectly shaped fruit that tasted great. Easily the best fresh eaters. Still had lots of fruit on the vines when frost came.
