NEW! A true Ozark heirloom watermelon! This strain was reportedly perfected and grown by a Mr. Hamby, Cedar County, Missouri as a market crop in the 1930's. Seed comes to us via Mr. John Lower of Bolivar, Missouri, who received seed from a Hamby descendant about 1995. Thin, striped green rinds; red-fleshed, nearly round fruits weighing 12 to 20 lbs on average, and occasionally larger; our grower reported that everyone who tried this variety felt it was the best they had ever tasted! Very sweet and delicious.

What are the pros? Strong vines

What are the cons? No melons

Review:

Not sure what is destroying my melons. It's late August and my vines are still spreading like wildfire and throwing flowers, but whenever I get a melon started, it's eaten by something in a day or so. The melons get to the size of cherry tomato and then the next day it's half eaten through. The vines themselves are extraordinarily healthy. I don't know if it's insects or some small mammal. It's too late to do any further investigation but my brother a few towns over grew some Ledmons and he had great success. Not one melon that started aborted or was destroyed by insect or rodent. He picked one of his Ledmons the other night and said it was fabulous. He's bringing one over this weekend so we all can have dinner and a quality melon afterwards.

What are the pros?

What are the cons?

Review:

Bought some seeds and had about a dozen melons from seeds that I planted in June. Have tried a lot of different melons over the years including Ali Baba. After just eating a slice, I have to say this is the BEST watermelon I have ever tasted! Bar none...it has such a sweet watermelon with a delightful aftertaste that I have never experienced before. It isn't a large melon..the one I just opened was about 7 pounds and they have a lot of big seeds. It is worth digging out every seed though! I will never plant any other melon after this!
