What are the pros? Laughs at heat and drought.
What are the cons? None.
This plant is amazing. Last summer the Midwest suffered indescribable heat of more than 90 degrees for well over a month, on top of a killer drought. But these cowpeas from Burkino Faso just plugged along as though nothing unusual was happening. They bore pods steadily until frost killed them. What's more, I didn't have to plant them again in the spring because stray seeds fell from withered vines over the winter (I didn't clean up my garden) and THEY SPROUTED IN THE SPRING. Who would have thought that an African crop, accustomed to hot weather, could overwinter its seeds in soggy cold and freezing conditions? A great plant.
