(Solanum lycopersicum) This is another one of the “tropical Hawaiian wonder tomatoes” that were created by the plant breeding genius Jim Gilbert when he was the director of The University of Hawaii tomato breeding project way back in the 60’s. In 2010 Dr. Gilbert received posthumous recognition for his extraordinary work on tomato breeding by the Tomato Genetics Consortium: a worldwide group of tomato breeders. The Healani Tomato is just one of his gems and we are proud to have it. Healani is a bush (non-vining) plant that is determinate ( meaning that it sets it’s fruit at the end of it’s growing cycle). It is great for patio plantings, is resistant to root-knot nematodes and will do well in hot humid conditions. The fruits are modestly tasty, but they perform well where other tomatoes would fail!
