Originally grown as a dye plant by the southwestern Hopi Nation, this variety has the reddest seedlings of any amaranth known, making it a natural for micro-green mixes! Plants reach 4-6 feet and cut a most striking figure in the garden! The Hopis use the deep-red flower bract as a natural dye to color their world-renowned piki bread.

What are the pros? Easy to grow, somewhat hearty

What are the cons? Seems to attract chewing bugs

Review:

I am not proficient in growing, but these have done quite well for me. I've been able to move them during a hurricane without losing a one of them. They seemed to take a while to grow, but once they hit about 6 inches they started shooting up. I'm gluten-free (not by choice) so I'm happy to be able to perpetuate a seed that's easy to grow and easy to save for next year. It produces so much, I don't feel like I'm sacrificing a large portion of stock.

What are the pros? Easy to grow

What are the cons? hard to find recipes

Review:

I originally bought this seed thinking it was a fiber dye plant, but then found it is for dyeing bread. I cannot find recipes that use the seed. It is beautiful though, and easy to grow! I can't wait to figure out how to use it!

What are the pros? Easy to grow

What are the cons? reseeds wildly

Review:

This is a plant you must plan on controlling, as it is a vigorous seeder. That makes it great for salads and stir fry dishes, because you will have thousands of seedlings. The dye is extracted by the solar dyeing method, as high heat destroys the color. Use an alum mordant.
