(Lactuca sativa) We acquired this old American variety during a seed trade with USDA in 1997. Due to its summer hardiness it is ideal for hot, humid areas of the US. The lettuce was created by a Chautauqua County, New York market gardener and then introduced commercially in 1873 by Chase Brothers of Rochester, New York. It develops large loose heads about 10 inches in diameter and is excellent for salads all through the summer. Plant 12 to 14 inches apart.
