Here's a really unusual variety from Australia, with a distinctive flavor and aroma. The elongated fruits are smooth-skinned; the skin splits and peels back when the fruits are fully ripe. Some say this resembles a Cobra's hood! The flesh is pinkish and unusually dry, and is often used to flavor homemade ice cream Down Under.

What are the pros? Grows well in mulch

What are the cons? Attracts squash bugs

Review:

Likes to grow in mulch. That is a plus for me. We have lots of bind weed and Bermuda grass. Neither of which grows well in my mulch garden. Matter of fact it had about taken over my mulch pile garden. However, I have never seen so many squash bugs in my garden. I usually keep on top of the the bugs. I COULDN'T KEEP UP! I had to uproot the plant to save my watermelons and honeydew from the invasion of the squash bugs.

What are the pros? Awesome grower great fruit set

What are the cons? Flavor

Review:

This fruit is easy to tell when it is ready to harvest. First the strong deliciously sweet aroma catches your attention, then visually, the fruit takes on more yellow coloration and the skin splits. Ants are highly attracted to the split fruit so a watchful eye is helpful. The aroma was so enticing my mouth was watering, but the flavor was a huge let down. Definitely has a hint of mild cantaloupe flavor with a uniqueness all its own. Very bland and something I would never use to flavor ice cream. There are much better tasting unique melons out there and I will probably not plant this again. For those of you who want to try, the seeds were very easy to germinate and the plants grew very well here in Las Vegas.

What are the pros? prolific, medium water needs

What are the cons? mealy texture great smoothie

Review:

Plant where vines can travel. 4plants 12 4 to 8 # melons and still covered with flowers. Mild canalope flaver. Makes great smoothies. My best producer in a period of severe drought and 100 heat.
