(Canna indica) A lovely species canna you can grow from seed. It produces lovely green plants with tropical foliage and smaller red to orange blooms. Easy to grow and is native to the Southern USA. The small black seeds are quite hard, and it is said that during a 19th century Indian Mutiny that soldiers resorted to using the seeds from this canna when they ran out of bullets in the wilderness. Grow as an annual or move inside in cooler climates.

What are the pros? Beautiful

What are the cons? None

Review:

I love canna lilies but until this year I had never attempted to grow them from seed. I can definitely see how these were once used in lieu of bullets. In fact a friend of mine will be attempting to use them in a few custom shotgun rounds later this year to see just how effective they might have been. I highly recommend using a pet nail cutter to nick the seeds and soak for 24 hours before planting. Using a knife will only end in nicked fingers.

What are the pros? Easy to grow, Foliage, Color

What are the cons? Small Flowered

Review:

I love all Cana Lilies, this one in particular has the brightest, most beautifully colored red blooms. Sadly, the flower size lacks in comparison to other varieties. Very easy to grow in any soil. Recommended if you are not expecting huge blooms. The foliage is standard for a Canna and is attractive and very green.

What are the pros? likes rich soil and medium moi

What are the cons? Too dry or too poor

Review:

Big leaves, amazingly red flowers. Really the reddest of reds. Gets tall, four or five feet Humming birds like the nectar. Makes lots of seeds, but I went around pruning seed heads off when small and green.
