Irish Poet Tassel Flower

(Emilia javanica) Beautiful bright orange variety for naturalistic gardens. This annual has long stems and small, bright orange flowers in clusters. These flowers have once been described as the windswept hair of an Irish poet. Suitable as a specialty cut flower, it is a colorful filler for summer bouquets. Grow in full sun on a soil with good drainage. Tassel Flower was introduced to England from Asia in 1799 and was also known as "Flora's Paintbrush" in Victorian times.

What are the pros? Wonderful for softening garden

What are the cons? None whatsoever

Review:

I first grew these in an heirloom garden in St. Louis and now have to grow them for friends and family all through the area. Irish Poet is easy to grow, dependable and the delicate little flowers give a delightful airy look to the garden. Their bright orange color is a wonderful jolt of color without being garish. Always an attention grabber!

What are the pros? as a cut flower

What are the cons? none

Review:

First time growing these. I sowed the seeds in a protected place in my garden and they germinated nicely but they didn't take off until I transplanted the small starts to sunnier areas. They look pretty enough in my garden but they look spectacular as a cut flower with some of my smaller sunflowers. The photo on this website is pretty accurate as far as color. BRIGHT orange but rather small size flower heads on thin stalks so the color is not overwhelming. I will grow these every year from now on. I would give 5 stars if the leaves were prettier.....

What are the pros? Beautiful, bright color

What are the cons? None

Review:

I started the seeds inside then transplanted them outdoors next to cosmos in May. Once established they grew fast, bloomed strong (still blooming) and now have begun to seed. I have decided to plant the whole pack this remaining season as they look great in mass.

I grew these for the first time this year, and am absolutely in love with them. They grew amazingly in my container, and are still going strong. I've already got seeds off of them, and can't wait to grow them again next year.

Bright orange dangling tassels that grew beautifully during the hottest weather St. Louis has seen in years. It bloomed all summer and into fall. A beautiful part of a new heirloom garden in an historic park. I'll be collecting seed soon.
