Introduced about 1793, this old onion is now hard to find. It is also called Brown Spanish by French seed house Vilmorin; in 1885 they said, "The winter supply of Paris and of a great part of Europe consists chiefly of this variety, which may be often seen hanging up in dwelling-houses in long hanks formed by interlacing and plaiting the withered leaves together." The roots are flattened and 3-4 inches across; the skin is a brownish yellow and the flesh is flavorful. This antique is known for its keeping qualities that made it a standard in Europe for over 200 years.

Review:

I'm new to growing onions but Jaune Paille stands out because of its excellent flavor and it performed superbly in the garden with minimal care. I put them in large paper bags in an unheated area under the stairs and they've kept beautifully for months now. Reordering them again for certain.

Review:

I live in the PNW Washington. Sowed these seeds indoors March, transplanted outdoors April 28th. Harvested late August. As of May the following year we still have firm onions in storage that's 7 months from harvest! Excellent sweet taste when fried or roasted. I will definitely buy this variety again.

Review:

Last year I grew 5 different kinds of long day onions. These were one of 2 that kept all winter. Their flavor is mild but not sweet. They are already in the garden for this year !!!

Review:

I started these in June via the "sprinkle/scatter" method, in a 2x3 self watering planter. I wasn't overly concerned with planning them as it was spur of the moment. They sprouted great, and I was able to get some pearl onions from them (as I didn't take the time to thin them out) and great scallions. I pulsed up the smallest to use for toppings for hot dogs, and sliced up the bigger ones to be used for hamburgers. Everyone loved them. Great pungent but not hot onion flavor, will be starting some outside again shortly.
