This variety was mentioned in 1629 and was planted in the gardens at Monticello by Thomas Jefferson. This traditional variety is shockingly beautiful with its near-black flowers and just a hint of red. Gorgeous planted out by the old white outhouse or in the back of your flower bed. A must for historical gardens. You'll love this richly-colored variety.

What are the pros? Didn't need attention

What are the cons? none.

Review:

I foolishly didn't realize hollyhocks were biennial, and thought the seeds I planted last year hadn't germinated! When the leaves came up last year, I thought my three year old had planted a pumpkin in my flower bed because the leaves are so similar to a squash. This year the leaves started, then the stalks and I was shocked when the beautiful black flowers opened. Talk about low effort, these took care of themselves. I can't wait to collect the seeds after the gorgeous blooms fade. Thanks for a true winner!

I planted this hollyhock and it was a quick producer from seed. It was prolific with it's blooming and huge flowers. Sometimes I would just go stand and stare at the velvety, deep dark blooms. LOVE IT!!

Review:

I planted this hollyhock about 3 years ago and it's been going strong ever since. It flowers all summer and the bees and birds love it! The dark velvety flowers are a fantastic backdrop to all the other colors in the garden. I've never seen anyone else with this color!

I started this plant from seed in 2008. Flowered this year and produced many strong stalks. Flower is very nice. Won a ribbon at the flower show with this one. Very happy to have it in my garden.
