(Pachyrhizus erosus) 120 days. Long vines can grow twenty feet long and produce delicious tubers. These have become very popular in the last few years. Very long season; these must be started very early in all areas except the deep South. Caution: The seeds and pods are poisonous, but the small pods are cooked in the Philippines.

What are the cons? none

Review:

I am in Atlanta,Georgia and I started my seeds using the papertowel method. It took maybe 2 weeks for them to germinate and open. Once they did I planted them. My plants never did vine like the description noted. They stayed quite small so I didn't think there would be anything when I pulled up one. I got one the size of a large turnip. It was crunchy, sweet and delicious. Sadly I only planted 4! I don't know what I was thinking about. Sigh.. well, until next year. I am hoping one of my plants go to seed. Will update if that happens.

What are the pros? large root, easy to grow

What are the cons? long growing time, has vines

Review:

I loved this plant. It has an excellent flavor, reminiscent of apples. The texture is like water chestnuts. Every member loved these. My only regret is I grew too few. We are in Florida, and have a long season. I might not be able to grow this if my season was very short.
