What are the pros? Beautiful, productive

What are the cons? Some leaves get shotholes.

Review:

In our hot humid Gulf Coast, all leaf amaranths grow well and produce nutritious additions to summer soups and stir-fries. Kerala Red however is absolutely gorgeous with deep red leaves and flaming red seed heads quickly getting head high. These fit in wherever you have an empty spot and self seed somewhat, so you have transplants next year. I only allow the deep red ones to grow, so it is easy to get beauty and good eating too. Thanks to the people of Kerala for this specialty.

What are the pros? Multipurpose Plant

What are the cons?

Review:

I bought a packet of these seeds in 2011 or 2012 but never planted them. I found them this spring (2015) and just decided to sprinkle them around in the garden instead of throwing them away. It is now August and I have had amaranth greens all summer. I've been picking the small plants whole so they don't take over, but I left a few in my raised beds and now have a number of gorgeous 6' tall amaranth plants that are protecting more heat sensitive plants from the August sun. They transplant easily too. I dug some up to move them to better spots and they didn't seem to notice at all. These plants also easily withstand 80-90 degree weather with very low water requirements (they are happy with a squirt once a week). I suspect they will get much bigger as well. I learned about this variety from the farm at the community college where I teach. They had two plants they had left growing off to the side of the rows. These reached 8' before they pulled them out.

What are the pros? flowers, leaves same color

What are the cons? none

Review:

I have grown these plants for over 20 years. Here in Ohio they can grow to 7 ft and easily branch out to look like a small tree. they germinate late and do not like to be transplanted, but self sow easily. they are spectacular in a grouping or by themselves. the leaves and the plants are the same color. they are excellent to act as shade for another plant or even to grow as a secret garden space for the kids.

What are the pros?

What are the cons?

Review:

Grown in zone 5, in black organic soil, the plants grew 5 ft tall....early growth stages were edible, fresh or steamed....became a beautiful row of deep purple foilage and seedheads.....seeds easily harvested in the fall.....will plant again, to use as a back of the border plant for other shorter flowers in the front....
