(Solanum lycopersicum) Just to call this a good Hawaiian tomato does not do this tomato of great heritage and history, justice. Kewalo is a determinate bush tomato, the plants are perfectly suitable for growing in large pots on the patio. Kewalo was developed by the great University of Hawaii plant breeder Dr. James C. Gilbert. Years ago there was a project to develop ultra resistant tropical tomatoes, it just happened that Kewalo was one of the selected varieties to use as parentage for that project. Even today Kewalo is still a great tomato, it tastes pretty good as tomatoes go, (it has a enough flavor to even be called an “heirloom”) and it will grow where a lot of other tomato varieties won’t! It is resistant to nematodes and bacterial wilt, so if you have had problems with these in the past this could be a great tomato for you. And even though it is great for the hot humid tropics it will happily grow anywhere any other tomato would grow.
