This variety was collected from Lau, a Chinese farmer in the highlands of Malaysia. It produces star shaped plants with long, thin, bright green pointed leaves. The flavor is sweet and very tasty. This variety was the fastest growing and most vigorous of the many lettuces grown in our 2006 trial. 50 seeds.

What are the pros? Texture, flavor, ease

What are the cons? None!

Review:

I planted several types of greens and lettuce this year, and this is my favorite. It grew quickly and vigorously from direct-sown seeds, and it handled the hot end of a San Jose summer with no problems. This lettuce has a unique and delightful texture - tender, but with a rich, toothsome bite. The flavor is mild with a pleasantly bitter edge, about halfway between romaine and escarole. It's nicely productive as well; half a square foot is providing me with salad every couple of days. By good luck I happened to pair it with salad burnet. They make a beautiful match. I will definitely be growing this lettuce again.

What are the pros? slow to bolt

What are the cons? iguana liked it too much.

Review:

this is the best lettuce i have grown or eaten.it is slow to bolt and held up to 98 degree temps.i planted in late feb.and it finely bolted in late july.can't beat that in south louisiana.my daughters iguana loved it and ate my seed plants, leaving black seeded simpson, and salad bowl standing.he has left us after 15 years,he was a "throw away".we paid for him and hoped.he was 6'long and he got what he wanted.he also liked winged peas and cherokee purple tom.
